The salt water ponds of Margherita di Saviia are ancient. In the ancient Roman era, the naturally formed salt deposits were already being gathered. During high tides the sea water would enter to low areas of the old lake Salpi and then evaporated, leaving the salt. The industrialisation of the salt collection and processing did not begin until much later, when they excavated canals to regulate the entry of the sea water and accelerate the evaporation process. The visit lasts three hours and during the visit the group will be transported by bus to the walking areas, as the lake is 20km long.
